Artist Statement:

In conversation with:  The Poet with the Birds, Marc Chagall (61.36.7)
“The Poet with the Birds by Marc Chagall comforts me when I look at it.  As a child I used to go the park; to a set of swings; to swing all afternoon, daydreaming. Thus, I am the poet lying on the grass, gazing up at the sky and trees.”

Artist Bio:

“I’ve been an artist the majority of my life, since I was eleven years old. I come from a low income background and appreciate my mom. It was because of her that I wanted to be more of an independent person. She pushed me to go to college. I thank her for that. In 1987 I studied in the University of Minnesota’s Studio Arts Program. The instructors gave me a real world view of the business of art, not just the creation of it. Art was clearly my strongest subject. I left the U of M in 1990 and applied to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1994, completing my degree in 1997. MCAD helped me with learning new techniques, but I found that the teachings of the University of Minnesota were invaluable.”[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1462203776020{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #f7f8f9 !important;}”]

Spectrum Artworks

Spectrum ArtWorks is a non-profit visual art program in the heart of Minneapolis that provides studio space and community for artists living with a mental illness.  In addition to producing amazing art Spectrum ArtWorks Artists work to educate the public and break down stigma. Spectrum ArtWorks is a program of RESOURCE.

As part of the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s ongoing community arts program, a group of artists from Spectrum ArtWorks were invited to select a work from the museum’s collection to respond to through their art. With thoughtfulness and enthusiasm for the opportunity, 17 artists produced original work that creates a “conversation” with their chosen piece from the museum. The results ranged in media and touched on many topics such as human connection, memories, and what it can mean to live with a mental illness. These interpretations allow us the opportunity to see these objects through a new lens, and consider the impact that art has on our lives through our personal experiences. Participant Cecile Bellamy connected with a painting by artist Marc Chagall and created Daydreaming in the Park.

Special thanks to Blick Art Materials and to RESOURCE for their support to ensure artists had access to supplies to produce the artwork. Exhibition Dates: November 5, 2015 – February 21, 2016
